Fibre History

Cotton has been used in the construction of tailored men's shirts since the 1700s. It superseded wool and linen as the shirtmaker's fibre of choice because of its luxurious next-of-skin feel, ensuring all-day comfort. Premium cotton fibres, such as the ones used in this M.J. Bale shirt, are soft, smooth and breathable, allowing for better airflow and moisture absorption. Shirts constructed from premium cotton also have superior durability, retaining their shape and colour after multiple washes. Additionally, cotton is hypoallergenic, meaning it is gentle on skin and non-irritative.

Construction

M.J. Bale shirts feature all the hallmarks of the British shirtmaking tradition. Our Blue Label shirts are constructed with shaped side gussets, a four-piece split back yoke, pleated cuffs, a long shirt tail, non-fused collar & cuff interlinings and constructed front placket. These details contribute to a superior fitting garment and a more durable wear.
