The boutonnière, a small floral decoration typically worn on the lapel of a suit or tuxedo, has a history dating back centuries. In Ancient Greece, warriors would often wear a sprig of a plant or flower to signify affiliation to a certain group or as a token of luck and protection. During the Renaissance it became common for noblemen to wear flowers as a fashionable statement, particularly during ceremonies and public events. The modern boutonnière as we recognise it today gained prominence in the 19th century, during the Victorian era and by the 20th century, the boutonnière had become closely associated with special occasions, particularly weddings and formal events.
