About Us | M.J. Bale

Our Story

M.J. Bale is an Australian-owned menswear brand founded in 2009.

We believe exceptional clothes come from extraordinary places, made by people who care deeply about what they do. For us that means conservationist woolgrowers in the wilds of Tasmania and New Zealand's Southern Alps, master tailors in Hokkaido, Japan, and weavers in Biella, Italy. We know every fibre, every farm, every maker.

Our founder Matt Jensen - the 'M.J.' in M.J. Bale, son of an Australian woolgrower - started this brand with one idea: close the distance from the farm gate to the store door. 96.5% of everything we make is from natural fibres. For our Kingston and Lake Hāwea Station collections, a percentage of every sale returns directly to the land that grew the wool - funding biodiversity preservation and revegetation. The way that we see it: the land sustains the wool. The wool sustains the garment. The garment sustains the land.

Our purpose is to create garments of integrity from  natural fibres - in harmony with the land, the animals and the people behind every thread.

We became B Corp-certified in April 2024 and operate a 90-store network across Australia, plus an international flagship in London’s fabled Jermyn Street. We are the Official Tailor to the Australian Test Cricket team, the Wallabies, CommBank Socceroos, Australian Kangaroos (rugby league), as well as a host of other sporting and cultural greats.
